Sampoor Handed Over To India

Only Indian workers with the security of the Navy are employed for projects in
the zone. Earlier ‘Lanka Irida’ had reported that lands of more than 1200
farmer families were handed over to an Indian company to build Sampoor power
house without paying any compensation for the land owners. These families still
live in refugee camps.
Also, a special zone has been assigned for laying of high-tension cables from
the power house and a very small amount as compensation is to be paid for the
lands taken over for this purpose state sources at Trincomalee District
Secretariat. According to these sources only Rs.700 would be paid as
compensation for removing a coconut tree.
