The final battle commenced at 2.00 a.m. on the 18th. By evening on the 18th terrorists were confined to an area of about 500sqm x 500sqm near Nandikadal Lagoon. When fighting commenced from this end the terrorists started attacking us from another point. By 2.30 a.m. the battle was raging at three fronts. The fighting ceased only at about 9.30 a.m. on the 19th. Prabakaran died at 9.30 a.m. on the 19th. This is the final fight when Prabakaran died. After this battle we found about 400 terrorist bodies. Prabakaran’s body was found where the last battle was fought on the 19th. We found 35 bodies at this site.
When the President announced in Parliament that the war was over the war was still going on. I too participated at this ceremony. After the ceremony when I was being driven I received the message mid way of the road from Parliament across Diyawanna that the war was over and Prabakaran’s body had been found. I gave a call to the President and said the war was over at that point of time.
When the President kissed the tarmac at BIA on the 16th the war was still going on.”
