President reprimands Basil’s close confidante Willie Gamage
The President had reprimanded Secretary to the Ministry of State Resources and Enterprise Development, Willie Gamage for appointing unsuitable people to positions to key posts in the state sector, sources from Temple Trees said.
Willie Gamage, who is a close confidante of Basil Rajapaksa, is the former head of SEMA.
Soon after President Mahinda Rajapaksa assumed office in 2005, heads and directors to state institutions were made under Basil’s and Willie’s supervision.
This time around First Son Namal Rajapaksa and Additional Presidential Secretary Gamini Senarath were assigned the task of making appointments to government institutions. However, the President has reprimanded Willie over several directors who had been appointed to state institutions following his recommendations, as they were not qualified to hold the respective position.
The President had also criticized Willie for carrying out his “Thineth” advertising agency solely on advertising from state institutions like the Lotteries Board. Thineth, located at the Ocean Tower building in Bambalapitiya is owned by one Lalith Hewagama while Willie is a key share holder of the company.
