Over 12 notorious underworld criminals wanted for crimes including extortion and murder have fled the country and in some instances have even sought political asylum overseas, police intelligence sources said.

According to sources among those who have managed to evade arrest are Kudu Lal, Rajabdeen, Bhaiya and Diga Faizer. Kudu Lal was well known for his connections to a Deputy Minister but has now reportedly sought asylum in London on the basis that he is under threat in Sri Lanka.

Intelligence sources claimed that the notorious criminals who have fled the country are now in India, Dubai and England adding that it has now become difficult for the Sri Lankan authorities to nab these culprits.

With the government cracking down on underworld activities in post war Sri Lanka some criminals who fled the country have urged political asylum by providing false information, Intelligence sources added.
